This is the non-profit project of the design studio MATTER. We operate a letterpress printshop, a retail bookstore, a small library. We host events and collaborate with our powerful intersectional community with programs focused on the (commons) public good.

MATTER is confronting at systems that have foundational thinking in anti-human and anti-planet themes. We engage with expert knowledge to discover and reduce the effects of these harmful systems and attempt to repair the harm they have already done.

The people at MATTER (and our collaborators) are makers, strategists, and designer-thinkers who have direct access to their big capable brains and tools to get things done like printing presses, wood tools, lasers, Guitars, and CNC manufacturing and more.

We do not simply aim to disrupt bias and the systems that we discover that perpetuate bias; we aim to find measures that can repair the harm that is being done. We share what we learn. We invite the discourse.

We believe that small action is still good action. Design speaks to the need. Our qualifications, availability, scope, and funding determine scale. Direct funding, lending, sharing, and gifting are ongoing actions; Priorities are co-created with communities, clients, and collaborators.

With respect to all fields of design, fashion, architecture, graphic or industrial, seeking opportunities to involve oneself in supply chain decisions, material conditions of workers, environmental impact and other critical concerns in design manufacturing is essential. For far too long other inhabitants of the planet are paying the cost of the needs of the few.
